An estimated 320,000 seabirds are reckoned to be unintentionally hooked and killed each year by fishing activities, of which 100,000 are albatrosses. Hookpod is an innovative solution that has the potential to eliminate the unnecessary deaths of albatrosses and other seabirds killed as a result of longline fishing. 

Join Becky and hear about the natural history of albatross and the Hookpod innovation that it is hoped will provide an alternative option to mitigate seabird bycatch during the setting of pelagic longlines.

Becky Ingham is a marine scientist (BSc, MSc in Marine Biology and Oceanography) who, after graduating, worked in the fisheries industry in the Southern Oceans as part of the Falklands government team of observers based on fishing vessels. She then became more involved with conservation issues, notably seabird interactions and bycatch mitigation as part of her role as Chief Executive of Falklands Conservation, a post she held for 9 years. On returning to the UK in 2005, Becky then became the Marketing Manager for the RSPB in Eastern England prior to joining Hookpod in 2013. Over the last 7 years, she has worked with the fishing industry, governments and a number of NGO’s to trial, develop, promote and manufacture the Hookpod, which has now been given approval as a stand-alone mitigation measure in the WCPFC and New Zealand waters, won several innovation awards and been recognised as ‘best practice’ by the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatross and Petrels.
