Map explanation

This map shows where changes occurred in the breeding season distribution of the species in Wiltshire between 1995-2000 and 2007-2012, as revealed by the fieldwork for Birds of Wiltshire (Wiltshire Ornithological Society 2007) and the shared fieldwork for Bird Atlas 2007-2011 (BTO 2013) and for Wiltshire Tetrad Atlas 2007-2012.

Dispersive and nomadic, Ruddy Shelducks inhabit lakes and rivers from Manchuria west to Turkey, sparingly in Greece and around the Black Sea with outposts in north Africa. In Britain there are historic records that may refer to genuine vagrants from their breeding areas, but recent records are assumed to be of escapes or their descendants. There is a small breeding population in Britain, with probable or confirmed breeding recorded from eleven sites during the fieldwork for Bird Atlas 2007-2011. Two of these sites are in Wiltshire, in a nestbox at Normanton Down, where breeding was confirmed in five successive years 2010-14, and at Coate Water.
